Combat the "Summer Slide" with ReDefiners World Languages!

For kids, summer is a time to kick back, relax, and have fun. It is a time to sleep late, go swimming, and travel. For parents and educators, however, summer can be a stressful time when crucial learning is lost. This phenomenon is often called the “summer slide.” With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s feared that kids will lose even more learning.

During the summer, kids lose an average of two months of reading and math skills. The lower the family’s income, the more skills the student will lose over the summer months. Higher-income families can afford summer enrichment programs, giving their children opportunities to use what they learned in meaningful ways. Studies have even observed the value of summer enrichment programs. A study observed that unequal access to summer learning opportunities in elementary school explains about two-thirds of the ninth-grade achievement gap between lower and higher-income youth.

Academic performance is a valid concern, especially during the pandemic.

The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated performance gaps between high-income students and low-income students. Many states have reported a drop in students enrolled in public school because of the pandemic. One recent study estimated that 3 million students have been missing from school since March 2020, when the pandemic forced schools to close. Even though we have little data, experts believe that this problem disproportionately affects vulnerable students. This population includes certain groups, such as homeless students, children with disabilities, children of immigrants, children in foster care, and children of color. It’s too soon to say how this will affect students long-term, but experts believe that the effects will be “catastrophic.” They fear that if the country does not address this problem soon, we will have a generation of kids who will be ill-prepared for college and careers.

What if there was a way to prevent this from happening? What if there was a way to give your kids a fun, educational summer and prevent further learning losses?

Learning doesn't have to be boring.

ReDefiners World Languages is happy to announce our 2021 Summer Spanish Immersion & Technology Program (LIT)! This camp is a 4-week program that is open to kids ages 6-11 (Kindergarten through 5th grade) in the Tampa area who are learning to speak Spanish at a beginner to intermediate level. During the camp, students will engage in an immersive Spanish program with 120 hours of language exposure. It will also include cultural enrichment that incorporates digital technology, virtual trips to Mexico and Puerto Rico, and literacy development. The camp will also include fitness, art, computer coding, robotics enrichment, swimming lessons, field trips, fire safety lessons, and a fire engine tour. This opportunity is a fun way to prevent the “summer slide” while preparing the next generation to be global citizens. After the camp, participants will be eligible to continue language courses at ReDefiners throughout the school year through income-based pricing.
